Details

The Hog Island sheep are a rare heritage breed originating from a small island on the eastern shore of Virginia. Sometimes called the "Chincateague Pony" of the sheep world this breed came to be from isolated island stock untouched for many generations. In the late 1970's their island home became a national park and the sheep where then removed and now are scattered in small flocks around the U.S.

Hog Island wool makes for sturdy garments such as sweaters, socks, blankets, hats, and gloves. Some lamb fleeces may have close to the skin quality. This roving is a medium fine from a 2 year old ewe I sheared this past summer. The roving has very minimal vegitable matter in it. I have spun a small swatch from this batch of roving and was very pleased with the results.
